Where do I start?
It’s a question I get a lot. I understand that beginning an exercise program for the first time can be intimidating. It’s also extremely difficult to know where or how to start.
I remember when I first started training at 15 years old. I was scared shitless. I went into the high school weight room and had no idea where to begin. I was weak, didn’t know how to do any of the exercises, and I was terrified I’d embarrass myself. Fortunately I had a few teachers who would workout during the lunch hour and gave me some assistance. For a while I focused on the basics and in time I grew in strength, confidence and knowledge. It’s incredible the base of fitness you can build by focusing on the basics. I improved rapidly in just months.
Recently I received an email from a person who was feeling disillusioned because the program in the ‘Maximus Body’ (my best selling book from Men’s health) was too difficult. My immediate reaction was to blame the person for a lack of work ethic or for not reading the instructions in the book but then I remembered that scared 15 year old kid who entered the weight room years ago.
With that in mind I have decided to write a beginner’s program. It’s something that I think could help a lot of people out there. in every demographic. It is very similar to the program I started with and very similar to what I’ve advised countless people to do in the past. When I say beginner don’t let that make you think it is easy either. It’s all about the effort you put into it. If I was to give this to even an intermediate or advanced athlete I think they would make gains if they put the right effort into it.
